You May Ask Me, How Did I Get Here? (and is it Welstein or Wells?)

Updated: Feb 14, 2023

I grew-up in Skokie and graduated with honors from Southern Illinois University with a degree in Communications. My career has always been centered around media. Radio was my first love. When I found out that SIU had a college radio station, I knew I had found my life's work.

After college, my first job was at a small radio station in Murphysboro Illinois. It was there that the director of programming changed my last name from Welstein to Wells (who was I to disagree). Three years later I moved back home to Chicago and joined WXRT as an on-air personality. After five years on-air in Chicago radio, I transitioned to sales and marketing. In 1989, I became the General Manager of WXRT. During my tenure at XRT, I became the first General Manager at WSCR (the Score). When CBS purchased WXRT and WSCR, I was promoted to CBS Senior Vice President and General Manager of those stations as well as WUSN (US-99 Country) and WCKG (Talk with Howard Stern, Jonathon Brandmeier, Kevin Mathews and Steve Dahl). In addition to my 35 years in Chicago, I also worked for CBS as a Senior VP in Southern California. Between my time at CBS in Chicago and Los Angeles, I managed a start-up radio company for a local owner in Chicago.

During my Radio career, I maintained an interest in technology and in the burgeoning cable television industry. This led me to serve as a Cable-TV Commissioner for the Village of Skokie. I have always considered myself an analytical and an early adopter. When home computers were new, I attended Mac Academy, where I learned how to operate the first-generation Macintosh computer as well as various Apple software programs. At CBS, I transitioned to PC computers. In addition to owning an early bag cell phone, I used both an original Blackberry 850 and a Hewlett Packard i-PAQ H-3600 personal assistant device before that technology became integrated into cell phones. I still enjoy keeping up with technology. Our household owns the latest Apple and Android phones as well as Apple-TV, Roku and Fire TV Sticks.

I was a consultant for a radio technology company when the Covid 19 pandemic struck and I decided to retire. While I currently volunteer as a driver for Meals on Wheels, as a retiree, I found myself with a lot of free time. This led me to do the research both in-store and online to start Lower Tech Bills.

I've discovered that all of that free time and research can really pay-off. I'm now saving money every month on my Cellular, Internet and Television bills. I've done the same for a few friends. I also have a much better understanding of how service providers work. They don't exactly make it easy to understand what all of their charges mean. Which is why so many of us say, "One day, I'll look into all of this, but on this day, I'm simply going to pay the bill."

So, that's how I got here - to Lower Tech Bills. If savings were there for me, they just might be there for you too. While you may not have the time to find them, I do.
